Manual Attack Computers

Slide rules and Submarines... what next?

Range Calculator

This little device uses the masthead height to calculate range to a target; I'm not sure how accurate it is. On the back it has a time-to-target calculator so you can time your torpedo attacks to minimize the warning given to other ships in the convoy.

Nasmith Director

Uses own course, target bearing, and target AOB to calculate target course.

Course Computer

Uses two observations (bearing and range) to calculate target course and speed, and an intercept course.

Another Course Computer

Uses three bearings to calculate target course.

Some Interesting Notes

Some notes on the Torpedo Data Computer, and some notes on the deveopment of submarine tactics, both excerpted from U.S. Submarines Through 1945: An Illustrated Design History, by Norman Friedman. One GREAT book, an absolute must-have for anyone interested in submarines.

Happy Hunting!

These are my little contributions to the world of Silent Hunter (or any other sub game, really). Hope you like them.

P.S. Comments can be directed to bill@gizmology.net. I am expecially looking for information regarding how submarines really carried out their attacks; I would dearly LOVE to get my paws on a genuine "whiz wheel"!
