INTRODUCTION

An alchemist is a specialist who turns reagents - natural substances, usually plant or animal parts - into potions with magical effects.
Potions play an important role on Vvardenfell. Thier production can also be quite profitable.
The Governing Statistic of Alchemy is Intelligence.
The Master Alchemist Trainer is Abelle Chriditte, who can be found in the Propylon Chamber at the stronghold Valenvaryon.
Alchemy is a Major Skill (base 30) for Bards and Witchhunters, and a Minor Skill (base 15) for Assassins, Battlemages, Healers, Mages, Pilgrims, Scouts, and Spellswords. For all others it is a miscellaneous skill (base 5). Argonians, Bretons, and Wood Elves all recieve a +5 bonus to thier starting Alchemy skill. The High Elves recieve a bonus of +10.

ALCHEMICAL TRAINING

At skill levels under ten, there is reason to believe that success in mixing potions, and the improvement to skill that success brinngs, is simply not possible for the untrained novice. Even at slightly higher levels of skill, a great many reagents may be consumed attempting to make a potion without success - and withoug success, there can be no immprovement on the part of the novice alchemist. Moreover, training at this low level is very inexpensive, so it is by far preferable for the novice to seek training.

At higher skill levels, training is less advantageous, both because it is more expensive, and also because the alchemist is far more likely to succeed in potion-making, thereby improving his skills without the excessive waste of reagents. At very high skill levels, training not only becomes prohibitively expensive, but also very hard to find. There is only one person in all of Vvardenfell, Abelle Chriditte of Valenvaryon, who can train to level 100, an I assure you she does not sell her services cheaply.

To those for whom training is no longer profitable, I say: Practice! Choose a simple, inexpensive, and useful potion, and produce it in large amounts. A good recipe is Wickwheat and Saltrice, two easily obtained and inexpensive reagents, which, when properly mixed, produce a Restore Health potion, one of the most useful and profitable of potions.

ALCHEMICAL APPARATUS

There are four pieces of apparatus that an Alchemist will desire:

- A Mortar and Pestle is used for crushing and mixing reagents.
- An Alembic, a form of basic still, decreases negative affects.
- A Calcinator, a small furnace used to roast reagents, increases all effects.
- A Retort, used for distillation and decomposition, increases the positive affects.

Alchemists who, like me, focus on potions without negative affects, will have little use for an Alembic. In a pinch a good skooma pipe can be used as an Alembic, but it is not very affective.

Naturally, lower quality apparatus is cheaper, but heavier and does not work as well as high wuality apparatus.

There is a Master's Apparatus available for public use on the top floor of the tower of the Mage's Guild in Caldera.

I reccomend purchasing a large supply of Wickwheat, Saltrice, and/or Marshmerrow at the same time as an Apprentice's Mortar and Pestle, and making a number of Restore Health potions with which to fund the purchase of a compete Journeyman's Apparatus.

POTION SUCCESS

The rate of success in potion-making appears to be proportional onlyy to alchemical skill, with a bit of luck thrown in. By way of example, when I was a novice, 22% of my potions were successful over the period when my skill increased from 15 to 17. Over the folllowing period, as my skill increased to 25, over 41% of my potions were successful. Graphing this data, assuming linear relationship, reveals a success rate of zero at a skill of approximately 9, and a slope of approximately 3%.

For the layman, this implies an increase in the rate of success of 3% per point of alchemical skill, and that a novice with skill less than 10 will be entirely unable to succeed, and therefore improve his skill, without training, no matter how often he tries.

Of course, these numbers are not definitive, and may have been influenced by luck, intelligence, and perhaps the quality of the apparatus used - I was forunate to have access to a Master's Apparatus, even as a novice.

POTION EFFICACY

The quality of the potion produced is directly proportional to the quality of the chemical apparatus used in its production, and the skill, intelligence, and luck of the alchemist.

Many alchemists produce Fortify Intelligence potions, Ash Yam and Netch Leather being commonly used, which they consume before making potions intended for sale. Intelligence being a factor in the potency of potions, this practice serves to increase it, and thus the potency and value of the potion, and the profit to be made by its sale. Enchanters are also said to use this effect to thier advantage.

Some alchemists, however, carry this practice to a dangerous extreme, producing instead more potent Fortify Intellligence potions, which they consume to produce even more potent Fortify Intelligence potions, continuing this cycle until they can produce potions of fantastic potency.

The novice, however, is warned against this practice, as it is addictive, and the hangover it results in is not to be quickly forgotten.

POTION WEIGHT

The weight of a potion is simply the average of the weight of the ingredients, which is to say the total weight of the ingredients divided by thier number.

The weight of a potion is sometimes more important than cost, especially to travelers and adventurers who must carry all their possessions. Lighter potions allow more to be carried, which may be the difference between life and death.

Restore Intelligence is a good example of the tradeoff sometimes required between cost and weight. When made of Bittergreen Petals and Scrap Metal, such a potion weighs a hefty five pounts, but only costs 25 septims to produce. When made of Bittergreen Petals and Ruby, such a potion is far more expensive to produce, at 205 septims, but only weighs .15 pounds. While mages safe in thier guildhouse may prefer the former for its low cost, travelers will prefer the latter for its low weight.

Adding inexpensive lightweight filters - reagents that do not react with either each other or the active ingredients in the potion - will decrease the weight of heavy potions, while adding marginally to thier cost.

If one is going to go to this extreme, however, one may as well add filter reagents that actually do something useful. For example, the above-mentioned Restore Intelligence potion weighing five pounds can be made lighter by adding Wickwheat and Saltrice. This will not only produce a potion that weighs half as much, but has the useful side effect of restoring health as well.

ALCHEMICAL REAGENTS

While the substances from which potions are made may be called "ingredients" or "components", I prefer the term "reagents."

Most Alchemical Reagents can be had simply by wandering around in the wilderness and collecting them from various plants and animals. Some, however, are difficult to find, or dangerous to harvest, and for this reason I have included the following list the names and locations of apothecaries whi carry the given reagent.

Most components have four effects, but some have fewer: for example, Racer Plumes have only two effects, and bread only one. The first of these effects can often be had by eating the item, while the other effects are only available when the Component is used in a potion.

ON THE CREATION OF POTIONS

Potions are created from reagents that share effects; for example, Wickwheat and Saltrice both share the Restore Health effect, and are therefore used to create Restore Health potions.

Potions that are made from components that share multiple effects, will have multiple effects - Hound Meat and Scrib Jelly, for example, share both the Fortify Fatigue and the Restore Fatigue effects, and will produce a potion with both effects. Metor Slime and Scrib Jelly form a particularly interesting combination, as they share four effects: Cure Blight Disease, Cure Poison, Fortify Willpower, and Restore Willpower.

More than two reagents can be combined. Saltrice and Chokeweed share the Restore Fatigue effect; Saltrice and Wickwheat share the Restore Health effect. A potion made from all three reagents has both effects.

Note that not all effects are positive: Saltrice and Scathecraw share the effect of Drain Strength, and if used together would produce a potion with this effect. The art of potion-making, therefore, is chosing components that share positive effects, and do not share negative effects.

If negative effects cannot be avoided, such as in the case of a Restore Agility potion which can only be made by combining Bonemeal with Sload Soap and has the side-effect of draining personality, then the use of an Alembic will minimize them.

The following is an Table of Reactions, a useful construct for determining the interaction of multiple ingredients. It is constructed by listing all four ingredients, and the reaction of the first with the remaining three; followed by the last three ingredients, and the reaction of the second with the last two; followed by the last two and their reaction. By this simple construct all the reactions involved can be determined without the risk of accidental omission.

Here is the Table of Reactions for one of my favorite potions, which I call "Messengers Nip", as it is good for running long distances.

This process works equally well with three ingredients. Here is the Table of Reactions for another of my favorite recipes:

The order that the reagents are listed does not matter in the least.

Note that there is usually more than one way to make a particular potion - for example, there are 55 different safe ways to make a Restore Fatigue potion. On the other hand, there is only one safe way to make a Restore Endurance potion, and NO safe way to make a Restore Agility potion.

The following is a list of two-reagent potion recipies, sorted by effect. Only safe potions, being those with no negative effects, are listed here, the exception being Restore Agility, which has no safe recipe.

In order for Alchemy to be profitable, a potion must cost more than the reagents from which it is made. A Restore Health potion has the same value be it made from Saltrice and Wickwheat (cost: 2gp) or from Corprus Weepings and Emerald (200gp). Therefore, the following list is secondarily sorted by the cost of the reagents in septim, from least to greatest. It is wise to use the cheapest reagents possible, reserving more expensive ones for when they're required. Chose your reagents wisely, and Alchemy can be very profitable!

Weight is often a consideration as well, especially if the potion is to be used by a traveler who must carry all his goods. Thus, the following list is tertiarily sorted by weight, from least to greatest.
